Yellowstone was signed into existence on March 1, 1872, forty-four years before the National Park Service that now administers it. Wildlife defines the corridor as much as the geology. Roughly 5,000 bison range the park, the only place in the United States where the species has persisted continuously since prehistory. Grizzlies, wolves reintroduced in 1995, and trumpeter swans on the river all share the same fourteen miles.
