Yellowstone was signed into existence on 1 March 1872, before Montana and Wyoming were states — a park protected by a country that had not yet finished drawing its own borders.
The West Entrance at West Yellowstone, MT 59758, opened onto that experiment in 1908, when the Oregon Short Line railway spur delivered passengers to a depot at the edge of the caldera. Wagons met the trains. Later, buses did.
The geology explains the crowds. Beneath the Central Plateau sits a magma reservoir that has driven three caldera-forming eruptions in 2.1 million years. Roughly half the world's active geysers stand within the park's 2.2 million acres, most of them concentrated in the Upper, Midway and Lower Geyser Basins strung along the Firehole River. Old Faithful, timed since 1870, still erupts on an interval averaging 94 minutes. Grand Prismatic Spring measures about 370 feet across, its bacterial mats pigmented by thermophiles that colour the runoff orange and rust.

Wildlife closes the picture. Grey wolves returned in 1995 after a seventy-year absence; the bison herd, reduced to roughly two dozen animals by 1902, now numbers in the thousands and remains the oldest continuously wild population in the United States. Elk, pronghorn, grizzly and osprey share the same valleys. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1978, Yellowstone remains, above all, a working volcano that happens to be open to visitors.
