Roughly half the world's active geysers erupt inside a single volcanic caldera, and the road to most of them begins in a Montana rail town. West Yellowstone was platted in 1908 as the terminus of a Union Pacific branch line, and its stone depot, finished in 1909, set passengers down a short walk from the park gate.

Yellowstone was signed into existence on March 1, 1872, the first national park in the world. Architecture here defers to the ground it stands on. Grand Prismatic Spring needs no such framing. At about 370 feet across, its concentric bands are thermophilic bacteria sorted by temperature, cooling outward from a sterile blue centre.
